When we were out in Colorado, I came across a couple books about the American Bison (Bison bison), commonly referred to as a buffalo. Yes, bison are the American mammal, though they usually aren’t at the top of the list of common house pets.

As I looked into this wild creature, I found a couple interesting articles. Here is my treasure trove of bison resources:

Northwest Michigan Camping: Lake Michigan Focus

Credit: Google Maps & MS Paint.

We have a friend coming this summer who wants to camp near Petoskey or Sleeping Bear Dunes. That got us hunting for a good campground. We really need to get Best Tent Camping: Michigan (2015).

I decided to put a list together like the one I did for southwest Michigan car camping. The list doesn’t include ferry options, for instance North and South Manitou Islands or Beaver Island. Some of these are more rustic, some more developed. Some are close to water, while others are slightly more inland.

Here are the campgrounds that stood out to us. I’m sure there are other great locations we’re missing, so share your favorites in the comments below.

Here is a table of travel times for the same cities I used in the analysis of southwest MI camping.

NW MI distances

Next I need to work on locations in the UP, but with so little vacation time, we tend to do most of our trips in the lower peninsula, but I’d love to see more of the UP (Thrillist.com | Exploringthenorth.com | Thegreatwaters.com).

Sure, on Instagram I follow the biggies like Jimmy Chin, Chris Burkard, Corey Rich, Cory Richards, Keith Ladzinski, Andy Mann, Forrest Mankins, Konsta Punkka, Travis Burke, Paul Nicklen, Renan Ozturk, Tim Kemple, Andrew Marshall, Ben Moon, Jeff Johnson, Camp 4 Collective, 3 Strings Productions, Nat Geo Adventure, and….

But here are 3 less-well-known adventurers and photogrsphers I really enjoy:

1) The Wanderlings —  Road trip from OR to Argentina.

2) MiVidaLeah — Cycling from CA to Patagonia.

3) Ben Woodworth — Showing how awesome it is to be a dad in northern MI.

20140703_111326On my walk this morning, I found a baby bluejay with a broken leg (picture 1). I went home and got a shoe box and a towel to retrieve it. When I got back to it 10 or 15 minutes later, it started screaming as I picked it up. I was too gentle, and it got away. All the while, it’s parents were screeching at me from the branches above. I couldn’t see a nest.

Since the parents were still involved, I wondered what I should do, so I posted my question on Facebook. Helpful people gave me instructions, and after reading more about bluejays online, I went back and picked up the little creature. This time it didn’t put up any fight, so I feared it might not make it (picture 2).
